When I thought about going to college, I wasn’t sure I would be able to go because my grades weren’t perfect and I wasn’t the perfect student. I applied to Florida A&M University, hoping for a chance to get in and not have to stay at home with my mom. I ended up having to write an essay to get accepted. From the moment I arrived on the campus, I felt it. It was home. Everything made me feel like I belonged there, like I was part of a new family. Being in the dorms, at the football games, attending classes—this was my extended family. Even though I didn’t graduate from FAMU, the love, family, and an unspoken feeling let me know I belonged and that I am stronger than I know. FAMU wasn’t my God, but it was an agent of God that filled me with the fuel I needed to navigate life. I am part of Club HBCU, and Cups Are Great!.
